Darren    Rhythm Guitar

How long have you been playing?

I started playing classical guitar in school at about 14 having previously studied violin… Since then I have played guitar and bass in many bands covering a wide range of musical styles including rock, pop, blues, rock ’n’ roll, folk and country.

Have you been in any other bands?

Amongst many short-lived originals and covers bands I have been a part of, I also spent a few years playing bass in the well established Cardiff based country band ‘The Cheating Hearts’ and was a guitarist in the backing band for successful Elvis impersonator Kurt Talon.

Who are your influences?

As a guitarist I particularly admire the special art of ‘rhythm guitar’ as displayed by great musicians like: James Cropper; James Hetfield; Bernard Butler; Johnny Marr; Graham Coxon; Nile Rodgers; Prince and Robbie Robertson… This is also an under appreciated side of the great David Gilmour that has influenced my playing.

What equipment do you use?

Fender Thinline Telecaster

Epiphone Les Paul

Taylor 12 String Acoustic

Yamaha Nylon Sting Acoustic

Line 6 Helix

Fender Hot Rod Deville 410

AER amplifier

Tell us about yourself.

While in Primary School I was featured in the Michael Aspel fronted quiz show ‘Childs play’… This included a couple of blazing hot days spent in London filming a Christmas Special!

If you were stranded on an island what music would you take with you?

Such a difficult question to answer because I like such a huge range of music… My answer changes every time I’m asked but currently I would take ‘Animals’ by Pink Floyd; ‘Big Machine’ by Eliza Carthy & The Wayward Band; ‘Bellowhead Live: The Farewell Tour’ by Bellowhead; ‘The Grand Experiment’ by The Neal Morse Band; ‘Whatever’s On Your Mind’ by Gomez and ‘Hand. Cannot. Erase’ by Steven Wilson… But then I might need some classical and some jazz too…Oh yeh and something by The Band - The 40th Anniversary version of ‘The Last Waltz’ should do!
